Through discussion of contemporary poets and short generative exercises, we’ll consider how to shape and even unsettle meaning. Participants will experiment with techniques that push beyond cliché and familiar phrasing, stepping into new, transformative realms of language at the edges, where we may invoke experiences and emotions that ordinary language often fails to reach. Attendees will be invited to work with themes of landscape and borders — physical, political, interior, and spiritual — but the workshop remains open in scope and is designed for writers of all levels who want to deepen their engagement with poetry and leave with new work in progress.

For a poet, the working unit is a breath. Most poets are familiar with line breaks and stanzas, but how can we look even more closely at how we parse language on the page? Poet and author LOGAN PHILLIPS discusses how developing a new relation-ship to “the poetic unit” unlocked a process of generative revision and original writing that became his latest book Reckon (The University of Arizona Press, 2026). Techniques such as caesura, parataxis, volta and genre hybridity are defined and offered as possible tools for use by poets —all in an accessible and playful atmosphere.

Rather than arguing for a single viewpoint, this session invites participants of all backgrounds to explore primary sources, founding-era context, and the evolution of church–state relationships in America. Whether you arrive convinced, skeptical, or simply curious, you will leave with a deeper understanding of how this question has been framed over time — and why the answer is more surprising and more complex than most of us expect.

Sam Woolcott has lived and worked in Bisbee for over 25 years and she can often be seen prowling around town looking for inspiration. Many of her drawings are finished on the spot and others are translated into pastels and paintings. She and her husband, Poe Dismuke, own the SamPoe Gallery at 33 Subway.

Is a syncopated voyage through funk's history, from it's African and jazz roots to James Brown's early work and the rise of Parliament Funkadelic. The film explores the symbiotic relationship between funk's explosion and the political and racial dynamics of 1970s inner-city America. An unapologetic expression of Black pride, resilience, and joy in the wake of the Civil Rights era. The film explores how funk's infectious grooves became a force of cultural resistance and self-determination. Packed with rare footage, legendary performances, and in-depth interviews with funk pioneers, WE WANT THE FUNK! captures the raw energy, deep soul, and unbreakable spirit of funk.

Kaitlyn Tyler has lived in Arizona since 2007 and fell in love with the Sonoran Desert and Sky Islands. Started work in conservation in 2019, before the Desert Museum, worked with Fish and Wildlife, Coronado National Forest, and obtained a bachelor's degree from UA in Natural Resources.
