WW 218 TORNADO IA KS MO 180105Z - 180800Z
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Tornado Watch Number 218 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 805 PM CDT Sun May 17 2026 The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a * Tornado Watch for portions of Central and Southern Iowa Far Northeast Kansas Northwest Missouri * Effective this Sunday night and Monday morning from 805 PM until 300 AM CDT. * Primary threats include... A couple tornadoes possible Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 80 mph likely Isolated large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible SUMMARY...A severe band of thunderstorms will move into the Watch from the west this evening posing a risk for a couple of tornadoes and scattered severe gusts (60-80 mph). A couple of embedded supercells are also possible over southwestern parts of the Watch area, where a risk for a tornado and large hail also exists. The risk will transition to mostly a wind-damage risk into the overnight hours as storms move into eastern parts of the Watch, but a lingering line-embedded tornado risk may continue. The tornado watch area is approximately along and 70 statute miles east and west of a line from 25 miles east northeast of Fort Dodge IA to 55 miles south southwest of Lamoni IA. For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update (WOUS64 KWNS WOU8). PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... REMEMBER...A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. && OTHER WATCH INFORMATION...CONTINUE...WW 213...WW 214...WW 215...WW 216...WW 217... MD 0766 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 216...218... FOR NORTHEAST IOWA INTO SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN
Mesoscale Discussion 0766 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1032 PM CDT Sun May 17 2026 Areas affected...northeast Iowa into southwest Wisconsin Concerning...Tornado Watch 216...218... Valid 180332Z - 180530Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 216, 218 continues. SUMMARY...Potential remains for damaging winds with the main line of storms. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out. DISCUSSION...A bow-echo is currently moving across north-central IA, with much of the push now north of the warm front. Recent surface observations indicate weaker wind gusts compared to earlier this evening as the cooler air is encountered. A warm front currently exists from this bow eastward into far southern WI. This boundary has not moved much, but may retreat northward overnight allow further destabilization into northeast IA and southwest WI. Given the 50 kt low-level jet, the surface cool layer immediately north of the warm front may become shallow enough to allow severe gusts to the surface. As such, the severe wind risk is expected to persist with the existing bow, and perhaps with additional waves that may form farther south along the squall line entering into central IA. An additional watch and/or extension may be needed into the remainder of eastern IA and into southwest WI in the coming hours. ..Jewell.. 05/18/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 0765 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 216...218... FOR PARTS OF NORTHWESTERN MISSOURI INTO CENTRAL IOWA AND FAR SOUTHERN MINNESOTA
Mesoscale Discussion 0765 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0930 PM CDT Sun May 17 2026 Areas affected...Parts of northwestern Missouri into central Iowa and far southern Minnesota Concerning...Tornado Watch 216...218... Valid 180230Z - 180400Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 216, 218 continues. SUMMARY...Severe gusts and brief line-embedded tornadoes will remain a concern with an elongated QLCS for at least the next few hours. A couple of gusts may exceed 75 mph. DISCUSSION...A mature QLCS, with multiple embedded bowing segments, continues across northwestern MO into central IA and southern MN. Embedded bowing segments have a history of severe gusts in the 60-75 mph range, as well as reported brief tornadoes along the leading line. While nocturnal cooling/stabilization has begun, surface temperatures remain in the upper 70s to near 80F across the warm sector, particularly over central IA. Given upper 60s to near 70 F surface dewpoints, boundary layer stabilization will be gradual, so the severe gust/QLCS tornado threat should persist for at least a few more hours. The relatively greatest threat for severe gusts and QLCS tornadoes remains with a prominent bowing segment in northern IA to MN, in close proximity to the warm front. However, severe gusts and perhaps a QLCS tornado may also occur with smaller surges in the broadened elongated QLCS across central and southern IA. ..Squitieri.. 05/18/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
